Swine Injection Technique
Intramuscular (IM): Deposits the Drug Into the Muscle
Use a spot on the neck just behind and below the ear.
- The neck area should be used for IM injections. (See area outlined in figure to the right.)
- Damage to the ham or loin can result in condemnation of the meat cut.
- Use proper needle size to ensure medication is deposited in the muscle.
Steps in Administering Injections Properly
- Select the right product
- Read the label
- Don't combine vaccines
- Use transfer needles
- Don't mix too many products
- Shake/gently rotate vaccine/medication prior to giving
- Mark and separate syringes
- Get air out of syringes
- Restrain animals properly
- Select best route of administration
- Choose best site of administration
- Choose the right needle
- Use proper injection technique
- Practice good sanitation
