Swine Injection Technique

Intramuscular (IM): Deposits the Drug Into the Muscle

  • pig injection site Use a spot on the neck just behind and below the ear.
  • The neck area should be used for IM injections. (See area outlined in figure to the right.)
  • Damage to the ham or loin can result in condemnation of the meat cut.
  • Use proper needle size to ensure medication is deposited in the muscle.

Steps in Administering Injections Properly

  1. Select the right product
  2. Read the label
  3. Don't combine vaccines
  4. Use transfer needles
  5. Don't mix too many products
  6. Shake/gently rotate vaccine/medication prior to giving
  7. Mark and separate syringes
  8. Get air out of syringes
  9. Restrain animals properly
  10. Select best route of administration
  11. Choose best site of administration
  12. Choose the right needle
  13. Use proper injection technique
  14. Practice good sanitation
